When you put an electronic cigarette between your lips and inhale, air flow is detected by a sensor, which triggers a heating element that vaporizes a nicotine solution which is stored in the mouthpiece. Most electronic cigarettes have an LED on the outer end of them that is also activated whilst inhaling – the purpose of it being to look like the lighted end of a real cigarette. The LED can be purchased in a number of different colors, but most people prefer the orange-red glow, as it is the most realistic. The liquid normally contains some kind of flavoring, and consists of nicotine dissolved in propylene glycol and / or glycerin. Both of those substances are common food additives, and are not considered harmful to your health. Different concentration levels of the nicotine solution allow you to choose the amount of nicotine you want to consume. Concentrations range from low (4mg/ml) to extra-high (50mg/ml). There are also solutions available that do not contain any nicotine at all. What makes electronic cigarettes so good is the ability to gradually reduce your dependence on nicotine. You can start off by replacing normal cigarettes with electronic ones that contain the same amount of nicotine, and then lower the concentration of the nicotine solution on a weekly basis. The combination of not smoking real cigarettes and a gradual reduction of the nicotine concentration in electronic cigarettes makes the challenge of ending your nicotine addiction much easier.
