Especially right before summer, there is always a lot of chatter about colon cleansing and losing weight. So, springtime lends itself to the popular discussion yet again. But what, you may wonder, does a colon cleanse actually do — and how can it really make you lose weight? Here are the basics to help you understand.
First of all, there are two different means of cleaning your colon. One is with supplements, and the other is the rectal method. Supplemental cleanses are accomplished by taking herbs or pills orally, and letting it travel naturally through your entire digestive system. This is a very simple method with great results. The rectal method, however, requires injecting liquid into the colon to flush it out. If you choose the rectal method, make sure you go to someone who is certified to do this process, as unsterile equipment or sloppy insertion (causing small tears) can cause serious infection to your colon that can occasionally even be fatal. Besides that obvious drawback, the rectal method can be uncomfortable and quite smelly, so many opt for the oral method.
What colon cleansing is purported to do is clean the toxins and excess sludge or waste out of your colon. In removing this, your body machine will function better, reduce bloating and flatten your tummy, give you more energy, and make you feel better. Some other positive effects claimed include relief from arthritis, menstrual cramps, IBS (Irritable Bower Syndrome), Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and Candida (yeast infection). Though thousands of people all over the world swear by this, there is a host people in the medical community that doubt it’s effects at all. Talk to those who have tried it, though, and you may be convinced of at least some of these benefits enough to want to try it.
Will you lose weight? Definitely — but it is not a fat loss solution. Though you may experience a more efficient metabolism by cleaning out the toxins from your colon (resulting in easier fat burning) The initial weight lost from the colon cleanse is not fat loss. Your stomach will be flatter and you will have significantly less bloating, but the weight loss will be from the sludge in your colon. Make no mistake, however, sometimes it can be up to 10 pounds or more.
The best thing to do if you are wondering if this might be for you is to talk to someone who has done it. You will be amazed (and possibly) disgusted at what comes out of your body. Once you’ve done it, there’s little doubt that holding onto all of that gook could be good for you.
