My boyfriend promises to quit his smoking officially if I stop biting my nails. My nails have been bitten down to the point where they can be bitten no further, and it's quite embarrassing. The people who do my manicures always make fun of me. I've been able to grow them out once but then I end up biting them.
It's difficult to keep my hands away from my mouth when I'm bored or nervous, I know it's a nasty habit (worse than his smoking?), but, I'm having kind of a difficult time. Any home remedies? Tips? The nasty tasting clear stuff bought at stores doesn't help, I chew right through it(;
Suggestion:
OK, firstly, smoking is way worse than biting your nails (though nail biting can have health consequences as well).
I helped my boyfriend stop chewing his nails by re-directing his hands whenever he started to chew his nails. I would take his hand and hold it. It took a very short time for him to get out of the habit.
I have heard it said (Dr. Phil, other self-help TV shows etc) that all it takes is 30 days to change a habit.
If you find yourself chewing your nails, stop then re-direct your hands to do something else (not to a new bad habit though!) like comb your hair, straighten your earrings, take a drink of water, powder your nose, lotion your hands etc. You could even give yourself a mini-manicure (push back your cuticles, lotion your fingertips, gently file away the rough ends and/or ridges).
Good luck!
