The 90-10 Diet – How Does It Differ from Other Diets?

Written by Joy Bauer, the 90/10 Weight-Loss Plan offers users a diverse plan that allows you to eat very well for 90% of the time while enjoying alternative comfort foods the remaining 10% of the time.

The premise behind 90/10 is that by allowing yourself to indulge in normally forbidden foods ten per cent of the time, you will be able to maintain your composure to eat clean the remaining ninety per cent of the time. This gives you an edge over typical low calorie, low carbohydrate diets because you won’t get deprivation cravings which can lead to binges.

The 90/10 plan is available in three different calorie levels: 1,200, 1,400, and 1,600 calories. The more physically active you are the higher amount of calories you are allowed to eat. The types of food you are able to eat on this plan include just about everything; however, you need to be very careful monitoring calories as well as portion sizes.

Here is a sample day of the 90/10 plan:

Breakfast – 1 cup of oatmeal, 1 cup of blueberries

Lunch – Tuna salad wrap with lettuce, tomato, chopped celery, and low fat cheese

Snack – Apple slices and peanut butter

Dinner – Chicken breast with brown rice and steamed broccoli, carrots, and green beans

Dessert – Piece of cheesecake

The reason that this meal plan will work is because you incorporate your “fun foods” into your total caloric intake. This allows you to maintain the preset amount of calories per day while allowing you to still enjoy foods you wouldn’t be able to otherwise. This, however, may present a problem to the people on the lower side of the caloric levels such as the 1,200 total calories. But this just means you will have to be more careful and aware of how you spend your calories. It can take some time before you are able to simply eyeball portions to know how many calories there are, but it becomes second nature within a few weeks.

The 90/10 diet provides a slightly less restrictive meal plan for people who are accustomed to low calorie diets which can triple the effectiveness and manageability of this diet. As you are keeping your calories generally below typical maintenance levels, you will be losing weight. It’s very possible to lose up to 8 – 10 pounds in a month on this diet as long as you monitor your calories and food choices.
