Natural Detoxification by Breathing Properly

The vast majority of people do not breathe properly and this has a dramatic impact on the body. If you are decided on undergoing natural detoxification, you have to realize that what you breathe in is also important. This approach to detoxification is supported by Ayurveda, a holistic health science practiced for centuries because of its long term benefits.

As your detoxification program with good diet, mental and physical exercises moves forward, the lungs and the sinuses often begin to clear. A runny nose can often be mistaken as the beginnings of a cold, and you may believe that you are feeling worse rather than better. This is what is called a ‘healing crisis’, when the body uses all of its channels of elimination in the process of healing.

Let’s go to work on your breathing. Have you ever watched a baby sleep? You will see it is the belly and not the chest that rises and falls with each inhalation and exhalation. When we are born we instinctively use belly breathing. It is a simple technique that increases the range of movement used by the diaphragm, hence, allowing the lungs to take in more oxygen and release carbon dioxide more effectively. This improves our immune system too.

Below are helpful steps that you can apply as part of your natural detoxification program:

1. Lie down comfortably on your back. Put your feet flat on the floor and your knees bent pointing upwards. Tune into your natural breathing for a few minutes.

2. Place your hands one on top of the other on your navel.

3. Take a deep breath in through your nose, filling your lungs completely. Then exhale slowly through your mouth.

4. When you have tuned in to the gentle rhythm of belly breathing, continue for 5 minutes more. Then, gently roll over to one side, and slowly sit up. If you have low blood pressure, you may need to turn onto the left side first before sitting up to avoid dizziness. Push yourself up gently by turning onto your right side.

5. Once you have completed 5 minutes of belly breathing, relax for a further 2 minutes in the soothing yoga posture called ‘child’s pose.’

This aspect in natural detoxification encourages us to relax and withdraw for a few precious moments. These short spells of relaxation can bring immeasurable long term benefits.
