People may experience hearing loss at almost any age. Some babies may experience hearing loss inside the birth canal. However, hearing loss is normally associated with aging. Look for the following signs of hearing loss.
You find yourself speaking more loudly or quietly than normal. Many times people with hearing loss begin to have difficulty in hearing their own voice. Without realizing it, they may be speaking much louder than the rest of the crowd. If a spouse or other loved one has made note of the loud conversation, the person may overcompensate and speak very softly.
If you notice that your family comes into a room where you are listening to the radio or watching television, and immediately begin turning down the volume, this may be a sign of hearing loss. Persons with hearing loss turn up the volume, believing that the show is running quiet tonight.
You have difficulty hearing on the phone. Fortunately, most modern phones have a volume control, so that persons with hearing loss are able to turn up the volume on the phone. Someone else may pick up your phone and make a comment about how loud it is. While talking about the phone, another sign is difficulty in hearing the ring of a cell phone. Since the rings are often heard in public, they are meant to be softer than a landline phone. When in a store with all the background noises, the cell phone ring just blends into all the other noise.
If your hearing loss took place at an early age, you may have learned to compensate through reading of lips. In fact, many persons may not even know that they have a hearing loss until a change in visual ability makes it difficult for them to “hear.” A person who reads lips will position himself or herself in such a way that they are directly facing the other person in the conversation. Persons with facial hair make lip reading difficult for some persons who read lips.
Some persons who develop a hearing problem begin to dominate conversations. Dominating the conversation keeps the person from being expected to answer other’s questions that the hearing-impaired person did not hear.
Sometimes persons with Proline Hearing Aid Batteries find that family or friends have expectations that the person has agreed to without understanding the commitment. When a person has hearing loss, his mind may subconsciously fill in the blanks with what would seem to be the normal conversation. The person with hearing loss may not realize that he did not hear what he thought he heard. This allows you to agree to commitments to which you did not mean to agree. Such actions can become embarrassing to the person experiencing hearing loss. To avoid situations like this you can get yourself batteries for hearing aids.
Audiologist. Sometimes hearing loss may be caused by a wax buildup in the ear canal. The hearing professional or your doctor can remove this build up and restore your hearing to normal.
