E-cigarettes are banned by some airlines to use onboard. American, Delta, Southwest and other airlines have written policies prohibiting the use. However, I don't think all airlines have banned them, but you might want to check with your airline. Also, from what I've read they do not set off airline smoke detectors.
Irish airline Ryanair not only allows them, they sell them onboard their flights.
