If Every Woman in My Dad's Family Gets Breast Cancer then Does It Matter if I Smoke?

It's pretty much in the bag that I'm getting this disease. I had an aunt who never smoked a day in her life but still got cancer. So if it's genetic then why should I take preventative measures?

Suggestion:

You are difinately in very high risk group.
Please understand following facts.–
An international research consortium, led by scientists at the German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, DKFZ), has identified a common gene variant that increases the risk of developing breast cancer.

A family history of breast cancer is reported in almost 5-10 pct breast cancer cases, suggesting the role of hereditary and genetic factors in the development of the disease.

The study on 9,523 breast cancer patients including 2,795 familial breast cancer cases and almost 14,000 healthy women, found that alterations in the genes known as BRCAI and BRCAII are a major cause of familial breast cancer and are responsible for almost 25 percent of such cases.

Smoking a pack a day for nine years was also found to increase breast cancer risks by 59 percent.

Though the impact of smoking seemed to decrease for menopausal women, it remained at 50 percent.

"Cancer is a complex disease and can be latent for several years. Therefore, it is important to work on the factors we can control and to lead a healthy lifestyle, which means watching one''s weight, avoid smoking and doing regular exercise,"
