I Want to Quit Smoking! Help?

I started @ 14, I'm 30 now. I stopped for a year @ 16 and stopped for 2 years @25 b/c I was pregnant and then breastfeeding. Then, magically, I started again. So,,, BIG question is… What has worked for those of you out there? I think I'm really ready this time to do it and be done w butts. I don't want to be medicated, but would consider gum, etc. I just need a little advice, support, etc.

Suggestion:

interestingly enough i quit smoking cold turkey last sunday night. it was very spur of the moment and i have hardly thought about it since. you have a child so this way could possibly work for you. i am a full custodial dad of two girls age 5 and 6. my 5 year old has been harping on me for quite some time about quitting smoking. i always gave her the runaround about, i'll quit someday, but always found good excuses to put off that day. then last sunday night, while smoking on my front porch i thought, "i really need to quit." i opened my pack and had two cigarettes left. i then went inside and called both of my kids downstairs. i told them that i would make a deal with them. the terms were that if they both promised me that they would never smoke or use drugs, that i would promise them that i would quit smoking that night. after answering their questions about what drugs were they promised and more importantly pinky swore to me that they would never smoke or do drugs. i then promised and pinky swore to them that after my last two cigarettes i would quit. i've stuck to my word so far and feel very confident that i will be successful this time. i have attempted to quit many different times in the past and came closest to success when taking chantix, when i had quit for an entire month, when my girlfriend at the time decided to start back up. in all honesty this time through has been easier. i would feel like such a worthless parent if i broke my promise to them and would never have a leg to stand on if they would choose to smoke or toke. in my own personal experience not smoking is easiest when their is absolutely no way you can smoke, i.e. plane trips. for me i know their is no possible way that i can smoke because of the guilt i would feel from breaking the promise, so i just haven't craved them this much. but, to be honest the chantix does help also, because as long as you are taking the pill, you will not benefit from smoking a cigarette, because the drug doesnt let the nicotine go to the receptors of the brain. i couldnt wrap my mind around buying a pack of smokes for 5 bucks if i wouldnt be able to bask in the pleasure of smoking a cigarette. the only problem was that i only had a two week supply of the chantix when i had quit for that month. hope this helps though, and good luck!

Buy bags of little carrots and carry them around with you.

Smoking is a really hard one. The best thing to do is not to be around anyone who smokes if possible, no bars it only leads to smoking, and the patch seemed to help a lot. The best thing to do is to stay away from people who smoke it can trigger it and if you have to be around them make sure you have patches 21mg. Good luck and God bless. It is hard but if you really want it you can have it.

Good luck. You cannot see the damage it is doing to your lungs.
