Nicotine gum was initially only available via a prescription from a doctor, but you can now buy it over the counter in most pharmacies. The recommended time for using it is 3 months. Unfortunately, some smokers find themselves becoming addicted to the nicotine gum. In a sense, people kick one habit and trade it for another. You may ask – “Is that bad?” Sure, a nicotine habit is bad – just like an addiction to caffeine or candy is bad, but what is worse – smoking or nicotine-laced gum? The answer is the smoking. Whilst nicotine is responsible for the addiction to cigarettes, it is not the cause of the health problems that smokers face. The reason cigarettes are so unhealthy is because of the thousands of chemicals added to them by the manufacturers. These chemicals are not found in nicotine gum. Nicotine-laced gum is also a more sensible way to give your body nicotine. The reason being that it enters your blood stream slowly over the course of 30-60 minutes, whereas cigarettes give you a higher dose of nicotine and in just 5 minutes. However, the gum can perpetuate your physical addiction to nicotine, and kicking the gum chewing can result in the same type of side effects as smoking. You can pay up to the price of a pack-and-a-half of cigarettes, so using it longer than the recommended 12 weeks will not save you any money in the long run. But, if you must have an expensive habit, gum chewing is the healthier option. It is a step in the right direction though, so first deal with quitting cigarettes, and then deal with quitting nicotine gum at a later date. Hopefully though, the gum addiction will not even arise – for most people it does not.
