I personally think the character's awesome but when you look at the facts he's probably a real anti-hero.

Suggestion:
He's just a flash version of Deighton's Harry Palmer, a rogue on the side of the good guys, I suppose. Palmer is much more of an anti-hero, though.
If Bond were straight-up and noble, he'd have been too boring to catch on. A swashbuckler of the modern era is what entertains!

Actually, Fleming took the name from the author of an ornithology book, "Birds of the West Indies", as he was an afficionado of the archipelago and a birdwatcher. Note how so many Bond stories are set there.
