Dangers of Ingesting Toothpicks?

I've been a heavy smoker for a big part of my life, and recently I decided I've had it with cigarettes. My friend told me chewing toothpicks was a good way of keeping one's mind of smoking, and so I decided to try it.

It worked really well this first day, however my wife's father told me that swallowing toothpicks might make you terminally ill.

Is this true? I've been swallowing well-chewed toothpicks, I would guess about twenty of them total. Could this be dangerous at all?

To me the thought is ridiculous, but I wanna be on the safe side.

10 points to whoever gives me the most rational answer the quickest.

Suggestion:

if you chew them small enough there should be no problem , chew them for about 5 minutes each before swallowing and all youll be doing is adding some fibre to your diet.
DO NOT swallow them whole tho because theyre sharp and pointy, and your intestines are very fragile, I dont think i need to explain how dangerous swallowing incompletely chewed toothpicks is!

btw congrats for quiting smoking!

You could end up with a perforated bowel. Think of a toothpick sticking out sideways when you go to the bathroom, and you'll get the idea.
