Cigarette Smokers, How Did You Quit for Good? (please Help Me)?

Hi. The problem here is my dad won't stop smoking. He's been smoking since before I was born, I think since he was 16 (didn't grow up in a good environment). He quit when I was 4. Then he started once again when I was 10. He managed to quit for a just a little while recently, I've now just turned 14. The other week, I saw him smoking again after he had used the patches and supposedly quit. I've seen him two other nights, coming in the back door. When I smell the smoke I ask him why he was out there, and he says something lame like, "I heard something out there," avoiding eye contact. Right.

Our family is being supportive, or trying. But it's hard. I've lost too many people I care about to smoking. 3/4 of my grandparents, 2 I never met and 1 I watched die right before my eyes, never met her either because she was in a stroke. My only living grandparent lost her leg to smoking and my aunt has only one lung because of it.

I want to help my dad quit smoking for good this time. I tried posting a sign on the door that he usually goes out to to smoke. He teared it down of course.

I don't feel sorry for myself. I just want my dad to be there for my highschool graduation…he missed my middle school one.

What can I do to help him?

Suggestion:

Your Dad is halfway there by wanting to give smoking up. He's lucky to have you encouraging him too. Nicotine patches do more harm than good, forget them, here's what to do. Log on to Amazon and get a copy of Allen Carr's book, "The Easy Way to Stop Smoking" . it works. Your Dad is encouraged to still keep smoking until he has read and followed the instructions. I have seen many, many people with cancer manage to quit with this method.
All the best, and good work.
