Can a Doctor Tell Me if I Have Any Damage on My Lungs from Smoking?

I have been smoking on and off for 20 years, about 6 cigarettes a day. For the last 6 months I have noticed I cough a few times a day and sometimes feel a bit of minor pain/tightness in my chest. I don't really like to bother my GP unless Im really sick, and she never does much anyway unless it is something major, which I understand, with the NHS the way it is. My symptoms aren't a major problem, I can live with them no problem, but they have made me curious to know if I have damaged my lungs, and by how much. If I have, it may inspire me to give up smoking.

Is there any place like a private clinic, that can do some kind of test or scan to see if my lungs are damaged, I don't mind paying.

Suggestion:

Smoking can certainly damage your lungs and put you at risk for a variety of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases and cancer.

Regardless of what the source of your current symptoms is, I recommend that you discuss smoking cessation with your family doctor. It is part of their job to provide advice and encourage you to stop smoking.

It is good that you are thinking about the ways in which smoking can affect your health. I recommend that you see your doctor and use this opportunity as an initiative to stop smoking.
