Quitting smoking is a goal that is not easy to accomplish. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep trying. In fact very few people are actually able to quit on their first try. The best quit smoking methods for you might not work for someone else. The point is to not give in, but maybe try something different. So if you’ve tried and can’t quit, consider trying one of these methods.
Cold turkey can be an effective way to stop smoking for some. But for others it’s hard to stick to. If the cold turkey method hasn’t worked for you in the past, here is a way to make it work.
The weekend before you are going to quit, try adding a little of what is sometimes referred to as aversion therapy, into the mix. You are basically going to become a smoking machine for a couple of days just prior to quitting.
What you want to do is to chain smoke your way through two or three packs for two or three days in a row. To make it as unpleasant as possible, smoke a different brand than you are used to. In fact, switching from regular to menthol or light to regular is even better.
For those couple of days, almost constantly have a cigarette going and smoke it quickly, so it tastes hot and awful. As soon as you butt one out light another. Start as soon as you get up in the morning and keep going until you go to bed at night. Smoke when you usually would, but also smoke when you usually wouldn’t care to smoke.
By the end of those days, you’ll find that you may be quite ready to quit. When the urge to smoke comes upon you, think back to how bad smoking that much made you feel. Associating smoking with unpleasant memories may make the difference in quitting or not.
Cutting back seems to work for some smokers but not so well for others. If it doesn’t work, it could be that it’s too easy to lose count of how many cigarettes you’ve already smoked, and so you smoke more than you think you have. Avoid this problem by each day, simply counting out how many cigarettes you are allowing yourself; then put them in a pack. Only smoke what is in the pack.
Ensure that you smoke as many cigarettes as you’ve allowed yourself, in order to gradually decrease the number of cigarettes that you are smoking each day. Over time, continue to eliminate one cigarette at a time, until there are no more cigarettes in your pack.
Another little tip is to eliminate those cigarettes you won’t miss as much, first. For instance, if you smoke two cigarettes with your morning coffee, try only smoking one instead. You’ll still be getting the mental satisfaction of a coffee and a cigarette, but you’ll be smoking fewer cigarettes.
If you have tried to quit and not been successful, maybe all you need is to try something a little different. The best quit smoking methods? Those would be the ones that work.
